1970年 参加湘西山区铁路修建，画下大量生活速写。
1971年 进邵阳市一小街道工厂当学徒工，工余习画。
1972年 完成第一幅油画创作，首次参加湖南省美展。
随后几年，作品多次入选各种美展。节俭集资数度外出，寻访名师，遍游神州。
1977年父亲平反，三幅油画作品先后入选全国美展。一幅油画为中国美术馆收藏。
高考首度恢复。考入广州美术学院油画系，结束了七年工厂生活。1982年毕业于广州美术学院，获学士学位。作品四幅在加拿人、新加坡、香港展出。分配至湖南长沙市艺术馆任职。与画友同创立湖南磊石油画研究会，其间多次举办画展。
1983年为湖南新图书馆大楼中央厅绘制巨幅陶瓷壁画。
1984年油画《山妹》和壁画《求索》入选第六届全国美展。
与年青诗人丹慧结为夫妇。
1985年湖南青年美术家协会成立。后任执行主席。
组织举办并参与湖南省首届青年美展，作品二幅获优秀奖。
1986年被中国美术家协会吸收为会员。三幅作品入选中同当代造型艺术展赴加拿大多伦多展出。年底，组织并参与湖南青年美术家集群展，赴北京中国美术馆展出。
1987年油画《十月》（孕）参加在上海举行的中国首届油画大展。为长沙艺术馆绘制大型壁画。油画《白光》获全省艺术馆展一等奖。
1988年作品二幅赴日本参加中国油画艺术展，为日本收藏家收藏。10月，被美国麻省艺术学院研究生部录取，赴美国自费留学深造。
1989年居洛杉肌学习英文。此期间，致力于人物肖像绘画。赴纽约、华盛顿、波士顿、费城、旧金山各大艺术博物馆考察研习。
1990年受聘于洛杉矾 DESIGN GALLERY画廊，为专职画家。期间，多次参与并举办各类画展。
1991年年初，与画廊解约。4月，获国际知名高僧星云大师鼎力支持，迁入洛杉矶蒙地拉精舍，潜心于表现中华民族情感弘扬人类博爱精神的艺术创作之中。
1992年5月，50幅作品于美国洛杉矶首次展出，获热烈反响。
1992年8月，迁入自购新宅建立《李自健艺术工作室》。
出版发行《李自健油画》大型画集。数十幅油画创作作品，被佛光缘美术馆收藏。
1993年元月于台湾高雄佛光山展览馆举行李自健油画大型个展。10月，在台北市立美术馆举办《李自健油画》个展，成为在该馆举办个展的第一位大陆画家。
1994年5月，《人性与爱·李自健油画国际巡回展》应邀赴德国柏林世界文化艺术馆展出。7月，问一画展于法国巴黎中华文化中心展出。8月，同一画展于英国伦敦TRAFALGAR展出。欧洲巡展期间，画家携妻子女儿游历欧洲十五国，参观欧洲各大艺术博物馆。12月，在香港举办的《当代名家艺术精品义卖》的拍卖会上，作品“雀儿飞过”以48万港币的该拍卖会的最高价卖出。
1995年3-4月，于台湾省立美术馆举办“人性与爱·李自健油画国际巡回展”与美术馆联合出版《国际巡回展》大型画集。5月，以售画款项建立李自健油画环球巡展基金会。
1996年5月，李自健油画环球巡回展应邀赴马来西亚吉隆坡国油美术馆展出。6月，同一画展巡回至新加坡世贸中心中央大厅展出。7月，同一画展应邀赴泰国国家美术馆展出。10月，李自健环球巡回展赴澳洲雪梨市市政厅展出。11月，同一画展于澳州沃伦冈市南天寺展览馆展出。应邀赴马来西亚首相府为首相马哈迪尔夫妇绘制油画肖像。
1997年1月，画展应邀赴南非开普敦艺术家协会展览馆及城堡艺廊分别展出。成为首位于南非举办大型个展的中国大陆艺术家。3月，画展应邀赴巴西圣保罗PINACOTECA州立美术馆展出，成为该馆建馆百年来，首次举办大型油画个展的中国艺术家。一幅展出品为美术馆永久典藏。5月，画展赴纽约圣·约瀚大学美术馆展出。6月，画展在纽约联合国总部大厦展出，联合国秘书长安南亲临参观，并接见画家夫妇。展出期间，应邀为联合国秘书长安南绘制纪念性肖像。作品《韧》等，选为联合国将发行的1999年老人年印刷品。8月，画展应邀赴洛杉矶加州大学拉克曼美术馆展出。9月，画展应邀赴温哥华哥伦比亚大学亚洲中心展出。11月，江泽民主席访美，画家夫妇应邀出席欢迎晚宴。12月中旬，画展赴香港大会堂展览厅展出。
1998年潜心创作，并游历多国，为再一次巡展行动，策定行程。
1999年5-7月，《人性与爱·李自健油画展》，应邀于台湾高雄市立美术馆展出，写下首位中国大陆画家在台湾三大美术馆举办大型油画个展的记录。10月，同一画展，应邀于荷兰西菲斯兰美术馆展出。
